Today I interviewed Richard Green, the director of the Crown Heights Youth Collective and co-director of Project CURE, a Black-Hasidic basketball team. He seemed like a passionate advocate for proper youth development. He focused a lot on the rage of the community of Crown Heights. He believed that the youth of the community did not have proper guidance and were being steered in the wrong direction. We had our interview in a car, with him in the front turning back to face me. He spoke like a teacher, educating me on why these protestors were behaving in the way they were. He had a slight slang accent when pronouncing words, speaking casually yet intelligently. He had dreadlocks and a reggae colored knit hat, showing that he is culturally connected to his roots.
When I portray him in my play I will have to make sure that the character also has dreadlocks with a similar hat to get a feel of connection to the youth. He seemed very casual so the actor who plays him should also be laid back, but with confidence and firmness in his words. He should speak with his hands to emphasize his thoughts and should maintain eye contact with the audience to seem serious in what he is saying.
